May Time Traditions in Prague

May in Prague isn’t just about nature – it’s also a time of unique and lively traditions:

  • April 30 – Witches’ Night (Čarodějnice): A Czech take on the ancient pagan festival of Beltane, Witches’ Night is celebrated with bonfires across the country. Families and friends gather to burn effigies of witches, symbolizing the end of winter and the welcoming of spring. It’s a night filled with music, food, and a truly magical atmosphere.
  • May 1 – The Day of Love: Known as the Czech equivalent of Valentine’s Day, May 1st is a romantic holiday where couples traditionally kiss under a blooming cherry tree, ensuring their love will last. The poet Karel Hynek Mácha’s famous work Máj (May) is often recited, and Petřín Hill becomes the most popular spot for romantic strolls.
  • Sakura Amber Ale: If we are lucky again, Strahov Monastery Brewery will repeat the annual April/May special semi-dark beer with Japanese Sakuracha leaves.

*Historical fact, May 1 – Labour Day & Its Communist Legacy: While May 1st is widely celebrated as a day of love in the Czech Republic, it was also heavily promoted as International Workers’ Day during the communist era. Under Soviet influence, grand parades filled with red flags, slogans, and mandatory participation became a staple of the day, serving as a tool of propaganda. Today, while the large-scale parades are a thing of the past, Labour Day is still recognized as a public holiday, though most Czechs prefer to embrace the romantic tradition instead!
